Terrae - compagnia di musiche popolari
“Unknown people” (ES 5387)

The new production of the band from Messina originates from the desire to tell, through music, some of the most significant – actually – most harrowing moments of Sicilian history. A mature record, with a strong musical and emotional impact, in which electronic sounds, electric guitars, and female voices are added to the basic elements of the quartet - violin, double bass, classic guitar, and percussion. This expansion of sounds is likely to point to a characterization of “world music” into an original purpose of “contemporary popular music”.

ORDER

A Fil de Ciel
“Vertigo” (ES 5388)

A lot of things have happened since, in 2004, the group from Cuneo, A fil de Ciel, released their homonym debut CD. The sound has changed since then, evolving and becoming more and more penetrating and original, but with no departing from the main track, where the band is always busy re-working – and in some cases even making up – precious songs, both sacred and profane, of the Occitan area, stretching through the Occitan dales, from Piedmont to the Pyrenees. Amongst the guests in this CD, Davide Arneodo, eclectic multi-instrumentalist, already a member of the band, these days a steady feature in the Marlene Kuntz line-up.

ORDER

Banda Brisca
“Io ballo brisco” (ES 5385)

After 15 years of concerts and folk dances all around Italy and the rest of Europe, and hundreds of gigs, we finally present the first official CD to celebrate this important birthday! It is a live CD, of course. It could not be any other way for a band whose mission is to play live and let people dance, everywhere it may happens.

ORDER

Andrea Capezzuoli / Francesco Nastasi
“...per far legria ai siuri de Milan” (ES 5386)

A long time ago, before the accordion spread across the musical landscape, the ancient duo of piffero and musa was the king of parties and folk dances in the area called “4 provinces” of Northern Italy. Now, for the first time in more than 50 years, Nastasi and Capezzuoli recreate the musical and emotional atmosphere that might have been enjoyed at a party at the beginning of the last century.

ORDER

Tendachënt
“Arnèis” (ES 5383)

4 long years after “La Valle dei Saraceni”, here’s finally the new wonderful disc of the band leaded by Maurizio Martinotti. A brand new sound is the first surprise of this CD, totally acoustic but incredibly powerful thanks to its clever arrangement. 14 new tracks, and (for the first time in the history of this band) also 5 bonus tracks recorded live during the last summer tour.

ORDER

Ariondassa
“Campagne grame” (ES 5384)

Third chapter of the discography of this great Piedmontese folk band. Along the years, their sound became a sort of visit card of their Region, unique and unmistakable. But this Compact presents some nice surprises, because of the new original repertoire and the refined arrangements.

ORDER

Suonabanda
“La bella è entrata in ballo” (ES 5382)

This Compact Disc marks the return on the musical scene of one of the historic bands involved after the Seventies in the Italian folk-revival. It represents the result of a project for the retrieval and re-incision on CD of old songs that are part of Italian Apennines’ musical tradition. One of them is the tradition of the celebration of the month of May, true protagonist of this work.

ORDER

Andrea Capezzuoli e Compagnia
“Tutto per amore” (ES 5380)

Here he comes again, exactly a year after the publication of “Suonato coi piedi”, currently one of the highest ranking acoustic ensembles. “Tutto per amore “ is a disc thought out to accompany dancing sessions but also dedicated to those who would rather kick back and relax and, with their eyes closed, let themselves be carried away by a wandering music that crosses the seas, docking at many ports, some very close and familiar, other remote and enchanting…

ORDER

Veziana
“Alba auba aurora aurore” (ES 5381)

Veziana, which means «joyful» in medieval Occitan, is a French-Pyrenean group whose music may be defined as a crossroad of styles. From the Middle Age to these days, and on either side deths Pirénéus, a deep rich vein of sonorities, musical practices and emotions have undergone a process of assimilation and exchange. Veziana is also a sound in itself, characterized by ensembles of voices, viola da gamba, qanoun, harp, hurdy-gurdies, bag-pipes and percussion.

ORDER

Enzo Avitabile
“Napoletana” (ES 5378)

“Napoletana” is an artistic project that reconnects, with simplicity, to the sources of sounds, made of work-songs and villanelle, but, at the same time, of songs that are totally unedited, etched in the cement of the city, with eyes fixed on the past and a heart that breathes in the scent of the future. A new music born from an old art, unique and overflowing with feeling, sought-after and innovative in the language.

ORDER

Talèh
“Ratapuntu” (ES 5379)

A piece of work perfectly tailored is this “Ratapuntu”, a term used in Sicilian to indicate the seam made with the sewing machine to obtain a finished edge. A metaphor of the artistic texture of this album: just like the accurate and delicate making of a tailored “piece”, it honours the experience of this boisterous ensemble from Ragusa, who have sung and represented the popular tradition of their land for over ten years.

ORDER

Picotage
“Je n'irai plus aux champs” (ES 5376)

Following the collection dedicated to Christmas carols - “Noëls” – the band is engaged again on the repertoire of Central France. This production is always clearly focussed on traditional sounds, but Picotage worked a lot to carefully mix them up with progressive, coming at the end to define their own music as musique d’Hammond better than musique du monde.

ORDER

Orchestra di Porta Palazzo
“Orchestra di Porta Palazzo” (ES 5377)

An album that hosts musics from all over the world within the urban context of a large city such as Turin, a paradigm of a multicultural society that finds no other equivalent in Italy. Fourteen musicians, from Tunisia, Algeria, China, Cuba, Senegal, Nigeria, United States, Mauritius Islands, and Italy, give life to a work that is variegated and kaleidoscopic and that has the energy of a live concert and the elegance of a studio production.

ORDER

Trigomigo
“Scuzà-ou aquì” (ES 5374)

In Varaita Valley, Southern Piedmont, many songs end with ‘scuzà-ou aquì! (excuse me!) to thank the audience for its patience. Trigomigo would also like to thank the audience for the patience awaiting for this record, now finally available! The long research, comprised of transcriptions, corrections and careful comparisons, has produced versions of trad lyrics extremely respectful of the sources, re-dressed in the band’s personal re-arrangements. Patrick Vaillant is present as a special guest in a couple of tracks.

ORDER

Aes Dana
“Far coasts... & lost tracks” (ES 5375)

On 1st June 2007 a sudden and unforgiving illness took the life of Giuseppe Leopizzi, musician, composer, fine arranger as well as founder of Aes Dana in the 1980s. In the first anniversary of his death we decided to crown what has been from time one of Giuseppe’s dreams: to reprint in digital form the first Aes Dana record, “The far coasts of Sicily”, published in 1987 by Hi Folks! Records. The track-list is represented here in its original format, but with the addition of three unpublished tracks by Aes Dana.

ORDER

A3
“Trasudando” (ES 5372)

This work deepens its roots into tradition, in the culture where women and men, elders and children, briganti and cumpari have told their stories. This band from the Province of Bari, with their maiden discographic voyage, sails along the infamous A3, the motorway connecting Salerno and Reggio Calabria, one of the most conspicuous symbols of a cultural and territorial panorama that clashes, at the same time, with the pride and the desire for redemption of Southern Italy.

ORDER

La Moresca Antica
“Migrare” (ES 5373)

Here's a new chapter in the history of the research in traditional maritime music: following Marinaresca and Li Turchi alla marina, the leading Umberto Mosca and Angelo Maffezzoli together with their most artistical crew give us a fully ripe work. The theme is all about men and music migration by the sea. Lots of goodies inside plus special guests such as Lucilla Galeazzi and Jack Coutts.

ORDER

Ensemble Sinigaglia
"La crava mangia ij more" (ES 5370)

Enrico Negro, Mario Cosco, and Ignazio Viola are three skilled guitarists from Turin, already known by classical-music enthusiasts as Trio Vivaldi. But since music has no strict borders between one kind and another, it was not difficult for them trespassing into folk repertoire, especially for Enrico Negro, who has already acquired a thorough experience. Here they come, their guitars’ melody intertwining with Paola Lombardo’s perfect voice, to pay tribute to Leone Sinigaglia, the great father of the traditional Piedmontese patrimony of songs.

ORDER

Andrea Capezzuoli e Compagnia
“Suonato coi piedi!” (ES 5371)

Virtually unknown in Italy, the traditional music of Quebec is a kind of mélange of Scot-Irish music with French songs. Alongside the fiddle, mandolin, guitar and piano, its typical instruments are the melodéon, the oldest kind of accordion, which is still found only in Quebec and Louisiana, and... the musicians’ feet, which make for a powerful rhythmic background in wild dances. Andrea Capezzuoli, who has always been very fond of this music, has collected a handful of classics of this genre and made a fizzy but at the same time accurate CD despite what its title would suggest (an old Italian refrain says that you do bad if you do using your feet).

ORDER

Coro Bajolese
“O Maria béla Maria” (ES 5368)

This CD continues the thirty-year’s long career of the celebrated choir of Bajo Dora, characterized by experimental hints, aiming at an even deeper knowledge of the oral culture of the people from Canavese (the area surrounding Ivrea, Piedmont). This new work is entirely dedicated to Piedmontese ballads drawn from the Nigra collection, which are performed in the typical suggestive way of this cult folk choir conducted by Amerigo Vigliermo.

ORDER

Esprit Follet
“Où Vont les Vieilles Lunes” (ES 5369)

According to Alpine legends, the name esprit follet was given to spiteful goblins that tied the chains of the cows each other, made milk crudle, and turned everything upside-down in the stables at night time. Rinaldo Doro and Sonia Cestonaro, the protagonists of this new project, are not true goblins but enjoyed themselves in messing around in the world of folk music, with a cheerful and energetic CD: waltzes, polkas, mazurkas and scottisches dating from the start of the 20th century, together with curentas and monferrinas from the Canavese, the area surrounding Ivrea, Piedmont.

ORDER

Roberto Carlotti
“Il giardino di Sofia” (ES 5366)

One of the most applauded accordion-player from Milan, finally gives birth to a CD all of his own, after so many experiences in folk bands and together with song-writers. A rich host of well appreciated special guests includes Stefano Valla, Gabriele Coltri, Vincenzo Caglioti, and Maurizio Dehò. Entirely written by Carlotti, this CD is delicately gliding away in a smooth chain of melodies that can be danced too but are preferably intended to grace the listening of those who love practice music through ears and not through feet!

ORDER

Domenico Torta e I Musicanti di Riva presso Chieri
“Saré l'uss e buté fòra 'l gat!” (ES 5367)

Following over ten years of activity, here it is at last their maiden-voyage CD: the fruit of one of the most creative Italian folk group astride music and drama well seasoned with humour. Marcette, one-step, fox-trot, waltz, mazurka, polka, brando, curenta, beguine, tango, and popular tunes from the flourishing Italian tradition alternate in a most longed for CD. Leaded by histrionic Domenico "Tasché" Torta, the eight multi-instrument Musicanti are able to studio reproduce the same cheerful but keen atmosphere of their live performances.

ORDER

Ma’arìa
“Sugnari” (ES 5364)

Two women with their extraordinary voices, the rhythm of the percussions, and an acoustic guitar a bit gipsy. All gathered around Valeria Cimò's poetry, a sort of alchemical mix of ordinary life, lullabies, fables, and dreams. Ma'arìa is a Sicilian word meaning witchery, spell, as to say what these young musicians used to give strenght to this debut album.

ORDER

Tandarandan
“Adalgisiana” (ES 5365)

Tandarandan come again under the light with this new project focussed on the trad music for the dance. Popular dances and tunes, gathered in the middle of the mountains between Liguria and Tuscany. Some of them are very ancient, like the ghiga, the pivata, and the quadriglia, some others (waltz, polka, mazurka, and scottisch) are more "modern", but not less fascinating! This compact was born in homage to the great number of old players of trad music Tandarandan met along their road.

ORDER

Falafel Project
“Arcobaleno” (ES 5362)

A new ensemble born among the vineyards, in the territory around Barolo and Barbaresco (Langhe district, Piedmont). The band is led by a master of the Piedmontese folk revival such as Silvio Orlandi. The record mingles traditional music with modern sounds, open to rock and even more jazz influences.

The voice & sax of the great Neapolitan artist meet the launeddas of Luigi Lai, and the hurdy-gurdy of Maurizio Martinotti, alongside with other unique instruments and chorus. An inner journey in search of the roots of spirituality, an imaginary travel from Nazareth to Naples, to lay emphasis on the evils and the pain of our cities, of the many “souths” of the world and of the suffering peoples.
È Nnato (1,8 Mb)

ORDER

Pau i Treva
“Pau i Treva” (ES 5359)

It gathers together musicians from Piedmont, Occitania, Catalunya and Pais Valencian, each one carrying his own store of personal experiences: Jordi Fabrègas, Maurizio Martinotti, Renat Sette, Toni Torregrossa, Paul James and many more!

Quartetto Tamborini
“Ël giardin dl'amor” (ES 5354)

Crowning the first ten years of their activity, the Piedmontese string quartet guided by Bruno Raiteri now presents its second record. The repertoire executed in the eleven tracks of the cd is practically unknown but its artistic value is exceptional: the album re-elaborates tunes by “minor” composers of the 19th and of the beginning of the 20th centuries.

ORDER

La Moresca Antica
"Marinaresca" (ES 5355)

A reprint of their first record, dating back to 2000, from the group which nowadays is the only Italian band to be actively engaged in the fascinating repertoire of sea songs. It is a convincing debut, where the quintet uses at its best their rich acoustic set of instruments, mainly of ancient and popular origin.

ORDER

Terrae
“38th parallelo instabili terre” (ES 5352)

With its eyes constantly fixed on a direction, south of the 38th parallel, the debut of “Terrae - compagnia di musiche popolari” ideally rejoins the threads of an ancient cohabitation, exploring its own memory and putting it alongside nearby cultures and musical traditions. The result is a traditional and at the same time innovative music, making popular melodies (from Sicily, Andalusia, Maghreb) resound in modern environments, bending classical instruments to popular expressive needs, decomposing familiar musical worlds and recomposing them in a personal manner.
Terra ca trema (1,5 Mb)

ORDER

Viamedina
“Viamedina” (ES 5353)

Via Medina is a street of Naples by the Port, a sort of borderline between the city and the sea, a meeting-point of different cultures and people. Once, in the nearby alleys there were a few nightclubs where tangos and tarantellas, blues and Tammurriate, jazz and popular Neapolitan songs were played and mixed together. Now that the clubs are gone, Viamedina gets a new life in this interesting musical project that, starting from the dialect, the melodies and the instruments of the Neapolitan tradition, takes different roads in order to put a new lymph in an already rich heritage of ancient memories.
